It looks like Amazon.com is at least back up partially, as you can now access the home page in the U.S. For about the last two hours. The message originally received when attempting to access the U.S. Amazon.com site was "Http/1.1 Service Unavailable."
The site went down sometime between 1:40 p.m to 3 p.m. EDT. With revenue generated from the site coming in at about $30,000 a minute, it has cost the company some serious sales.
According to Amazon outage policy, if it lasts longer than 30 minutes but under two hours, listings are allowed to be extended for twice the time of the outage. If the outage is for over two hours, the listings are given an extra 24 hours according to the company policy.
At this time it seems the site is partially restored, although attempts at some transactions have been not able to get through at the time of this writing.
Amazon sites outside the U.S. appear to be functioning fine.
