The racing of the 134th Kentucky Derby today, where the post time is 6:04 PM EST, is a great look at a product branded and marketed in a highly efficient and successful way.
It takes in numerous variables, which when added together, make it such a successful event and brand.
What's amazing about it to me, is the race isn't the real event, it's the experience of the entire process and involvement for those participating as fans that is so valuable.
Now that doesn't mean the race is parenthetical, just that the race alone could never be what makes this an event - and so popular.
You have the handicapping and betting, the buzz about horses and their strengths and weaknesses, a place to be seen, celebrities and the Derby hats that are shown off; and a host of other things included that make is so huge.
The point I want to make here is any marketing or branding campaign is successful when something bigger than the product or service itself is part of the experience. That's what the Kentucky Derby is year after year, and is a great example of extraordinary branding and marketing.
Another big part of their success is it's one of the few sporting events that is attractive to both men and women, and has something both can enjoy and engage in that interests them.
When you consider the race itself is for less than two minutes, you see the great job of marketing that has went on over the years in making this such a worldwide phenomenon.
