Projections by eMarketer reveal that in the U.S. alone there will continue to be significant growth in the number of bloggers, as well as strong advertising growth in the sector over the next several years.
The Internet company says by 2012 there will be over 35 million people in America creating their own blogs, which equates to about 16 percent of the overall Web population.
While that is interesting, will anybody be reading blogs at that time? According to eMarketer, over 145 million people will visit blogs at least once monthly in the U.S. by 2012. In 2007 that number stood at 94 million. The 145 million readers will represent 67 percent of the overall Internet population in the U.S. in 2012.
For those writing and posting on blogs to make money, the news gets better, as forecasts are revenue in the U.S. will grow from $283 million in 2007 to $746 million by 2012. That's an impressive increase by any measurement.
Paul Verna, eMarketer senior analyst and author of the new report, The Blogosphere: A Mass Movement from Grass Roots, said about the key driver of the phenomenon: "A big factor driving the increases is the niche orientation of the blogosphere."
This reinforces the ongoing changes in the media and entertainment world, causing fits for traditional media companies, as the population continues to fragment in its various interests, because tools offering people the ability to communicate about what interests them draws people to very targeted subjects, making mass media less desirable to most. This is not going to go away in the foreseeable future.

Good news for people like me who depend on blogging for their livelihood.
