An recent article by Seth Godin talks about what he calls "silly traffic," a term he uses for general Web traffic coming to your Web site without focus.
Some of the things Godin recommends to combat general traffic and send them on their way, while getting more targeted traffic, is to "Increase their participation, their devotion, their interconnection and their value."
He adds that it will "Turn those existing users into ambassadors, charged with the idea of bring you traffic that is focused, traffic with intent."
All that sounds good, but what does it simply mean? All it means is get a niche and serve it well. That's it. It's no more complicated than that. All the suggestions offered by Godin above are just another way of saying to focus on a certain type of person with a targeted interest or interests. Do that and the rest will take care of itself.
I put together a series of articles you can get a really good idea on what the foundations behind a good niche strategy will be and do. Go here and you'll find a series of articles I wrote called, "An In-depth Look at Niche Marketing." Scroll down a little way until you see the links to the series.
Eventually what you'll learn is more than anything else, the niche itself becomes the marketing and magnet for targeted, focused traffic.
