Apple iTunes (Nasdaq:AAPL) tells Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT) to move it on over, as the company claims they've leapfrogged over the giant retailer to become the No. 1 music retailer in the United States in February.
The No. 3 company in music sales was Best Buy Co. (NYSE:BBY), with Target (NYSE:TGT) and Amazon.com (Nasdaq:AMZN) tied for fourth, said a survey from The NPD Group.
How it was determined was by "tabulated units sold, counting every 12 digital downloads as one CD. It did not count sales revenue, nor mobile music sales."
Since its 2003 launch, iTunes has sold over 4 billion tracks, much of that attributed to its ubiquitous iPod.
While we really didn't need it reinforced, it does confirm the ongoing migration from CDs to digital music by the majority of users.
