A number of Yahoo! (Nasdaq:YHOO) employees expressed concern about what would happen if Microsoft (Nasdaq:MSFT) ends up taking them over. Evidently they say they are afraid to lose their "fun-loving culture."
The problem is their "fun-loving" culture is going down the drain, as about 1,000 people are being let go. I don't think that's too fun for them.
Another person who used to be an executive at the company had a different take as well, saying, "Morale has been so bad. They've been bombarded with bad news for the past two years. This looks to me like a positive option. I think they should go for it and I think they will."
While I'm all for a fun business culture, at the same time, you're in business to make money. For example, Southwest Airlines (NYSE:LUV) under Herb Kelleher was one of the most fun places to work in the world, but they also delivered quarter after quarter of profits - unprecedented in the airline industry.
Some even said the reason they've retained great workers is because of the fun culture. My thought is: so what? How great can they be with the company in the mess it's in?
Yahoo! has a lot more problems to be concerned with than whether they have fun at work or not. Like I mentioned, they're having so much fun that 1,000 people had to be let go. They have to get other things in order before they're concerned about "fun" at work.
One thing Microsoft does know how to do, is make money, as their last quarterly results revealed. Maybe Yahoo! needs a little discipline before they worry over whether they can play or not.
