With the economic stimulus plan going to be signed by President Bush soon, it is worth taking into consideration what this means for online marketers.
The first checks are scheduled to be released in May, and the rest throughout the summer. The only exception to that would be those tax filers that have extensions and so won't receive their rebates until later in the year. For the most part though, during May through August, there will be billions of dollars flowing to consumers in the U.S. for the purpose of being spent, and a lot of them will oblige.
What this means for online marketers is we need to think of ways to tap into this reality. This is a unique opportunity that rarely comes along. Many consumers will take that money and look for ways to spend it as soon as it is put in their hands.
So with billions filtering into the U.S. economy, we need to be there with products or services to offer consumers in response to the upcoming spending spree.
There are so many things that could be done, that it would be impossible to cover even a fraction of them. The point is we should be planning for this now, and be ready for the influx before the money is released.
For our email lists we could put together something that could be promoted now, all the way through the end of the year, and it would have a great change as snaring significant dollars. I would start this with reminding people of their upcoming windfall and the things you have to offer them that they can spend their money on.
Even if there's nothing specific developed yet, I would start sending things out in mid-April to get people's minds on spending their money on your offerings. You wouldn't have to offer specifics, just announce a special, unique new product/opportunity etc. that will be coming their way.
Another thing you could do is do this with more than one product or service, and stagger their introduction throughout the time period people will be receiving their money. That way you can get fresh stuff in front of your customers, and maybe catch some of those laggards that take more time to decide what to do with their cash.
The bottom line is this is an extraordinary opportunity to cash in on something that we may never see again in our professional lifetimes.
Another thing to think about is this doesn't necessarily mean we have to create completely new products or services, we can repackage, reposition, offer discounts etc., of existing products. The point is to be ready with a campaign or campaigns timed to coincide with the billions of dollars about to be released into the economy be U.S. consumers.
