The death of William F. Buckley today, who is considered the father of the modern conservative movement, highlights what someone has the capability of accomplishing in the midst of overwhelming opposition and resistance from entrenched opponents.
Since this is an online marketing blog, I'm not going to get into the specific conservative focus of Buckley, but into his overall accomplishments and success.
At the time Buckley started to emerge, he was primarily a lone voice against the liberal majority at the time. As a matter of fact, the liberal agenda was so entrenched in the psyche of Americans and the media, it was for the most part assumed it was the way things would be forever. Buckley rose up and challenged that notion, and wildly succeeded in giving birth to something he was extraordinarily passionate about.
The point is to see the tremendous opposition that he faced, and yet was able to not only find his voice in it, but wildly succeed in numerous aspects connected to it.
He ended up hosting the popular "Firing Line" show for 33 years, wrote close to 50 books and thousands of articles for his newspaper column, which was syndicated over 100s of newspapers, and was probably most importantly known for giving writers and television hosts that followed the example, motivation, inspiration and platform to follow in his footsteps.
What we need to understand is Buckley took a small germ of an idea he truly believed in, and faithfully continued to plant it over the years. Overall he never left his foundations, and was true to his vision.
If we are able to commit to that in our online ventures, over a period of time we'll also be able to make great strides in our chosen endeavors.
Even though Buckley seemingly had no chance of making it, his persistance and focus allowed him to overcome seemingly hopeless odds. If we can do the same, nothing can stop us either. Buckley's life was a testament to that fact.
