The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is again upon us, and I wanted to take minute to talk about the importance of how Sony Corp. (SNE) is using the show to showcase a couple of products.
With the reintroduction of their OLED TVs and robotic music player, Sony is doing something we need to learn from in order to keep our brand in the minds of consumers.
What the simple strategy entails is the continual talk and marketing of products or services in the pipeline or prototypes stage, which are compelling but not quite ready for the public.
The reason you do it is because there's always an ongoing introduction products soon to be released or to be released in the not-too-distant future. If we don't put our future products or services in the minds of consumers or potential business customers, somebody else will position themselves in their minds.
It's the old carrot and stick trick. We must keep our innovation and leadership in the minds of people so they look to us for their future needs or wants. If we don't, again, our competitors - whether known or unknown - well definitely do it, even if it's their first product introduction.
So when we communicate in the various channels we do with our customers, allude to upcoming products in the pipeline, talk about your future plans ... get them involved in your progression and progress. What it does is make them a part of your story and success, in the sense that they feel part of the picture, being embedded in its vision.
The real story as it relates to Sony and other companies at the Consumer Electronics show is in presenting their future and the story they want to tell. They are also reminding everyone of the ongoing innovative thrust they're engaging in on their behalf. It makes people look forward to seeing what's coming next and what the future holds as far as being expressed through our company's products.
Future stories about our upcoming releases stirs the imagination of people, and creates an image that is powerful in their minds. It's something we should never stop doing. It keeps people on board with us, if for no other reason than curiosity and wondering what's happening next.
People like to hear about the future, we may as be one of them that help them see it through our own vision.
