The latest report from comScore concerning e-commerce sales for the Christmas season show it was a season to be jolly, as results handily broke an all-time record, ending at $29 billion. That's an increase of 19 percent over 2006.
This was the final report by comScore on spending for the season, which covered from November 1 - December 31.
“This year’s online holiday shopping season has concluded with a record $29 billion in spending, a 19% gain versus year ago,” said comScore Chairman Gian Fulgoni. “Ultimately, the softness in the growth of online retail sales during the first 10 days of November proved difficult to overcome and prevented the season’s growth rate from reaching our forecast of 20%.”
Leading the way for the top online sales day was December 10, which drew $881 million in sales, while the best sales week was the one ending on December 16, concluding with $4.7 billion in online sales.
While "Cyber Monday" is touted as the big selling day online, in reality it finished in 9th place for the biggest selling day, with sales reaching $733 million. It did help change the picture though, as it recorded the first big surge in Web spending for the season.
The leading retail category for the season concerning online sales was everything related to videogames, which surged by 129 percent over the 2006 holiday season. Those figures include games, consoles and add ons.
Other areas of strong growth were furniture and appliances, which increased by 67 percent; tickets to events, which grew by 24 percent; and consumer electronics which ended up by 23 percent.
A ususally strong category of watches and jewelry fell this season, probably related to the rising commodity prices with precious metals.

Christmas is here and the best part of Christmas is undoubtedly Christmas shopping. The Pleasure of buying gifts for your loved ones is beyond description and compare.
