Only about a week after Motorola (MOT) CEO Ed Zander stepped down, chief technology officer, Padmasree Warrior is now also leaving the company. The reason given was to pursue other opportunities, but no one is saying if it was really forced or otherwise. Warrior worked at Motorola for 23 years.
According to company spokeswoman Jennifer Erickson, Rich Nottenberg will oversee the technology leadership of Motorola.
A lot of this change has been related to the apparent inability of the company to follow through on its highly successful Razr phone, and has the dubious reputation of becoming a one-hit wonder.
This just about completes the transformation of the top leadership of the company, as CEO Ed Zander, the CFO and now CTO are all gone. (Zander as of Jan. 1.)
Greg Brown, who is replacing Zander, isn't going to name a chief operating officer, so no one will be in the former position he held.
Nokia (NOK) and Samsung Electronics has been consistently winning market share from the company, the major reason for the shake up at the top of the company. That and activist investor Carl Icahn doing some saber-rattling has also had an impact.
One last thing, you've got to love Padmasree Warrior's name. It sounds Star Wars-like. I think she should license it to George Lucas. That would be a good career move.
