The introduction of a fully operational Wikia search engine is much closer to becoming a reality, as Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales announced a beta launch has occurred, and a public launch is expected on January 7.
As far as how the beta will be run, Wikia CEO Gil Penchina said, "users are being asked politely to withhold posting any information about the beta until the public launch on January 7. Hopefully people will respect that - there are bound to be some major hiccups and Wikia deserves a chance to iron those out before what is sure to be a ton of attention on the product."
Community input will continue to be the philosophy behind the Wikia search engins, similar to Wikipedia. The relevance of search results will be determined by members of the community, and the results will be moved up or down dependent on community responses and input.
There will also be self-policing of the site to make sure the system is defended against those who may attempt to abuse or game it.
