The heroics of volunteer security guard Jeanne Ammas at New Life Church is a amazing lesson on having the right people in the right job at the right time.
Yesterday she possibly saved the lives of between 50 to 100 people, as New Life Church came under a shooting attack.
After gunman Mathew Murray shot at a family in the parking lot, killing two sisters and injuring their father, and then shooting and injuring one more person before entering the building, Jeanne Assam saw him coming in and she said she hid until he got closer. At that time she got up from under cover and confronted the gunman.
She shot several rounds at him, taking him down, even though he was heavily armed and in full body armor.
All this wasn't just luck or good fortune, people are screened at the church when seeking to be security guards, and are fully trained and able to do their jobs if called upon in these types of situations.
While most of us will never face this type of life or death situation, it does show how important it is to have the right people in place in any business or organization we run or are involved with.
Because of the consequences related to the security industry when situations come about, it's obviously a much tougher screening process in certain areas than other jobs may require. At the same time though, how many times do we do very little screening of potential hires for our businesses, only to not get anybody close to being what we need?
In the end, it's having the right people, with the right disposition, giving them great training, and then getting out of their way to let them do their jobs.
You can be sure it was done right at New Life Church, as the circumstances unfold, Jeanne Assam has been found to be the absolute right person at the right time to handle the difficult circumstance. She knew lives were in her hands, and she had committed to protecting the people entrusted to her care. She didn't shrink from her responsibility, and saved many lives as a result.
We need a few of her type in our businesses. You get them be knowing what you want, the type of person needed to do it, and then taking the time and performing enough interviews with that person to weed out the pretenders.
It's tremendous to get the right people in the right positions within our companies. The results are sometimes many times more than we can ever imagine. It's worth taking the time and effort until we found that person. Who knows how many people have to thank Jeanne Ammas for saving their lives. Doing her job kept them from having to find out. She's a real hero.
