Avant Gaudy was recently featured in Businessweek.com as being started by one of the "Best Young Entrepreneurs." While there were a variety of field those featured were involved in, the majority of those featured were in the Internet business some way.
For Avant Gaudy, Deborah Umunnabuike, a political science major at the University of Chicago and co-founder with her sister Jessica of the company, they saw an opportunity for vintage clothing which the business is built around. They started the company in 2005, and it has been growing ever since.
Not only do they serve customers in the U.S., but they have a growing clientele internationally as well; including Australia, Southeast Asia and parts of Europe. They've hired an employee to target the Asian area specifically, as it's a strong demographic for them.
Take a look at the list and get encouraged from the success stories offered in the article. If you choose to visit the Avant Gaudy site, you'll probably have trouble for a day or two, as it has been bombarded with visitors and has had trouble keeping their server up. They do have an Avant Gaudy blog you can check out here.
It's interesting to hear the ladies say they started the business because of their passion for clothes, and the desire by peers for vintage clothing. I'm especially impressed by that because most people wouldn't have thought that people in their young 20s and 30s would have an interest in this type of clothing. Just shows you there's a market for anything if you look long and hard enough.
