Statistics in the online celebrity gossip category show that for the time being, there may be an overload that people are starting to take a break from, as a number of big gossip web sites have had declining numbers recently.
Nielsen/NetRatings stats show that over the last three months, the only site that has experienced growth has been People.com. which ended September with 6.5 million unique visitors from the U.S., up by a hefty 1.5 million from July.
TMZ, on the other hand, dropped to 9.4 million in August, down from the 10.3 million in July, although they did rebound in September to reach the July numbers again. Perez Hilton's blog has also faded, dropping from 2.4 million in July to 2.2 million in September. UsMagazine has remained the same since July.
Taking everything into account, it does serve notice that there may be a shaking out in the industry, as many of these sites mirror each others stories, adding a little twist hear and there to differentiate.
If that's what's happening here, we may see some of these sites being bought up, partnering or possibly merging in the near future.
