What can someone that has lost complete control of their life and brand do in reference to marketing? The answer is not a whole lot.
A brand and marketing are intertwined. They aren't two separate things that can grow together regardless.
In the case of any brand or product, when the brand is under fire and weakened, it's time to get the brand healthy again before you try to fight back with marketing. All marketing can do is remind people of the weakness of the brand.
Britney Spears, as a human being and brand is weakened now. Losing physical custody of her children is the latest episode the reinforces that reality.
If I was her I'd take myself completely out of the limelight and quietly go about learning to be healthy again. She can't do it in the public eye, that's already been proven by her actions and behavior.
It looks like she is having difficulty understanding that who she is and what she does is her brand. With her being a brand as a human being, she can't separate that from the marketing of herself.
So when she puts herself out there, rather than her brand being reinforced in a way that strengthens her career and propels it forward, she's actually hurting herself, not only professionally, but personally, as her life continues to implode and explode at the same time.
That's the reason I think she should stop trying to market herself and keep her brand before the eyes of the world. At this time she's more of a laughingstock professionally and ridiculed in her personal life. There is no respect for her on either front.
Every human being and brand has to take time to lick their wounds once in a while, and reevaluate where they are, what they represent and where they want to go. I think Britney Spears is at that place now. She desperately needs someone that actually cares about her to help her find the way. That can only be done in a quiet manner until she gets her life together again. If she doesn't, her losses could end up being more than just her children.
The best thing she could do, and ourselves as well, is to take some time off and just regroup. Britney Spears is definitely at that moment in her life.
