I wondered when some of the traditional media companies would start to think of ways to use technology to help themselves, rather than complain and fret about the changes technology has brought upon them.
A case in point is the announcement by ABC News that they're creating seven one-man overseas bureaus using small, hand-held video cameras and editing-enabled laptops. They can either upload by broadband or use a portable satellite dish in areas broadband isn't available.
This doesn't mean there won't be the continuation of large bureaus in important cities and regions, just that media companies can extend their coverage and focus at the price of one bureau in many cases. In this instance, the seven one-man bureaus equal the cost of one normal bureau. It's just good busienss.
Of course what can work for the big guys and also work for the small guys as well. It shows what technology can do and how it empowers everyone.
Even with the example used, think of it if you have interests in certain content areas and have contacts across the country or the world. If they have the technology to do it, you could partner with them to provide original content for you or each other that transcends anything you could do on your own.
When you put together technology, contacts and interests, it provides a plethora of ideas and possibilities that didn't exist not too long ago.
This just shows one of the many things that could be done with these ideas in mind.
