The 50th Anniversary of Sputnik reminds me of how online marketing has changed the way business works. Not so much the obvious technology that helps streamline things and help use information better, but more importantly in the area of getting to the market first.
Past business practices had taken on the trend of the first one to market would for the most part be the market leader almost indefinitely. On the Internet, in many ways that reality has been turned on its head.
The major reason this is so is because there is so much unsurety and unproven ways of doing things, that the first to market is more of a laboratory for others to watch and learn from, than necessarily a market leader that is uncatchable. Like everything else, there are exceptions to everything - the obvious example be Google with search. But in most areas in online business or marketing, getting there first isn't a death sentence to other marketers.
While Sputnik gave the Soviet Union the lead in the space race, and resulted in them putting Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space, it didn't ensure them the lead in space exploration, as we all know.
What this means is even if someone gets there before you in some areas, there's plenty of room to succeed and be successful online. There are so many ways to leapfrog others and offer little twists to existing efforts, that there's room for many success stories and businesses online.
Don't think there isn't room for a lot of business on the Internet, we're really still in the early stages of the trend. There's a ton of opportunity waiting for you.
