The announcement by Slacker, Inc. that it has landed a number of deals with leading independent music labels and distributors will give it access to millions of songs, when brought together with its existing deals with the four major music labels.
Talking about landing the deals and the strategy of the company, Slacker CEO Dennis Mudd said, "Slacker is focused on building the world's largest and most eclectic music radio catalog. With these licenses, we enable music lovers to create deeper and more diverse radio stations than ever before, and play them wherever they go."
Some of the major independents Slacker made deals with are The Orchard, IRIS, Beggars Group, IODA, Ubiquity Records, Sanctuary Group PLC and Matador Records. Included in the agreements are the rights to offer the music content on any platform through Slacker's "Personal Radio."
The first thing Slacker will do is offer the music on its Slacker Personal Radio, which allows users to create their customized radio station on slacker.com. Later in the year they'll over it on Slacker Portable Players.
Slacker users will be able to create their own stations or customize the existing 100+ professional stations available to them.
There will additional content about the artists, album reviews and cover art with the Slacker Web Player, Slacker Portable or Desktop Radio.
All the content will be offered free to users through an ad-supported model. Interested parties can partake in the beta at the site now.
Eventually the company will offer Slacker Premium Radio, which will include additional features.
