The popular online series "Prom Queen" has entered its second season, as the creation of former Disney (DIS) CEO Michael Eisner's Vuguru has launched.
According to their press release, blinkx says they have "a content agreement with Vuguru, Michael Eisner's independent new media studio. Under the terms of the agreement, blinkx will host and distribute the sequel to the successful Web drama, "Prom Queen" which debuted in April, and will share revenue with Vuguru based on number of views."
It can also be seen on promqueen.tv.
"Prom Queen's" first season was highly successful, with over 15 million people tuning in to view the Web series.
Suranga Chandratillake, founder and CEO, blinkx, said concerning the series "We're delighted to be partnering with Vuguru to distribute this pioneering content to
audiences on the Web. This is high-quality, addictive drama that was produced exclusively for online viewing, in a format that has proven tremendously successful in the new media landscape -- more than 15 million people watched the first series when it premiered in Spring."
Chandratillake was asked by Searchenginewatch if he though this would increase the likelyhood of more exclusive Internet-scripted/produced drama.
He answered: "Yes, definitely. We think there is a great audience out there for this type of content; and we think that Vuguru has tapped into it, they've done a good job with it, and we expect there to be a lot more."
I believe he's right. The Internet public is looking for quick snacks in everything they consume; video is no different. Quality, scripted, short-form video content will be a growing, thriving business for years to come.
Monetization of quality content will also be a growing industry for a long time. Advertisers are still looking for a reason to put their products alongside or within great content on the Internet. Those providing it will be highly successful for the foreseeable future.
