Over the last couple weeks, Prince has had his lawyers request about 2,000 illegal video uploads of his material be removed from YouTube (GOOG). Along with YouTube, Prince has threatened to sue eBay (eBay) and Pirate Bay as well, saying he is on a miission to "reclaim the internet" from outrageous piracy.
Prince has hired Web Sheriff to lead the battle against online piracy of his material, and will initiate lawsuits in the US and UK as part of their strategy.
Talking to MediaGuardian.co.uk, Web Sheriff managing director, John Giacobbi said, "99% of the stuff online is totally unauthorised.
"Someone has to start somewhere and we know this will make a serious impact - a hell of a lot of artists are going to follow suit.
"We have to build a 21st century model for the entertainment industry."
Giacobbi also said once the cases against the larger companies are won, smaller sites will line up and be respectful of the rights and work of artists.
Other areas of piracy, besides video and music, has been ringtones and "bootleg" merchandise.
