Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) announced in a press release that the number of movies tv shows being viewed on customer's computers has increased to 10 million episodes. That doubles the number of people using the service over the last 6 weeks, with 5 million watching the offerings from January to July 7.
According to the company, the reason for the growth is people are starting to become more aware of the feature and the growing number of desirable titles like "Pan's Labyinth," "The Good German" and "Letters to Iwo Jima" being added to the service.
Netflix members are able to browse through movies by title, star or genre when looking for something of interest. There is also an added personalized recommendation that is based on what users have watched in the past.
This is good news for the company with the growing pressure of Blockbuster on their physical DVD rentals. Even so, it's a business model easily copied, and will be a challenge to keep from becoming a commodity.
