Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves: Lessons from the Celebrity Rumor Mill

The mostly frivolous news about celebrities that nobody can seem to get enough of, is an interesting study in how you can enter mutually beneficial relationships that can explode your marketing results.

One of the hottest stories from that outlook, is the constant search to find Matthew McConaughey and his beautiful girlfriend, Brazilian model Camila Alves together. Every time they're seen together it's a major story around the Internet, as well as on celebrity TV shows that can't seem to get enough of the sighting of this couple.

Another side story in all this is whether the two are really secretly married.

It reminds me how in our own marketing, we need to create interesting stories like this that capture the imagination of the people we're reaching out to.

One of the things that creates interesting stories are the people or events we interact with.

When you hear about products coming soon from companies, immediately you see the rumor mills start to churn and stories fly all over the world about what it may be, and what is included with it. Similar to the curiosity generated from celebrity couples and all the questions surrounding where they're going with their relationships.

In the case of products rumored in the pipeline of a company, it's not quite knowing exactly what it is, and the release of partial information that makes it such an interesting story that stirs up the curiosity of people. But more than that, it's the generating of questions and conversation that makes it really take off virally. In other words, it becomes a social experience.

That's what all of this is really about: creating scenarios that make people want to talk about them. Many times, in the case of celebrities, they aren't really even in relationships together, they simply go out to fuel the speculation that causes people to communicate their own theories on what, if anything, is going on between them. Just being seen together fuels the tremendous amount of free publicity they get. The rest takes care of itself.
