Independent short-form filmmakers will have a new opportunity to generate revenue from their creations as News Corp. (NWS-A) is partnering with MyDamnChannel.com to offer up their videos on MySpace. The company also signed a deal with Google (GOOG) in July.
My Damn Channel Chief Executive Rob Barnett said "I knew the professionals would be coming to Web video. The plan for this company was to give up a lot of old-media rules that said, `I want to be exclusive,' and make sure our content appears on as many destinations as possible." He added that MySpace and YouTube were the top priorities to land deals with.
In the first month of operation, the website received around 5 million page views, much of that attributed to commedian Harry Shearer promoting the site on his appearances on TV shows; specifically Bill Maher and Conan O'Brien.
The company is looking for videos in the approximate 5 to 7 minute range, and will split the revenue with filmmakers in order to motivate them to continue creating videos for the website. Payment will come out of MyDamnChannels share, while News Corp. will receive a share of the revenue.
