Andrew Meyer, Online Video, Power of Mashups

I talked on one of my other blogs about the incident with Andrew Meyer when he was questioning John Kerry and resisting arrest, which eventually led to him being tasered.

Most reading thealphamarketer are aware of what mashups are, and how we can piece together content to make them into our own, uqique creations.

A lot of the video coverage of Meyer and the event was cut so what was most interesting was shown to viewers.

The problem this brings up is how mashups can impact the truth of something that happens, even if it's not done on purpose, but for downsizing the video reasons.

Most of us know how the Interent can be used to communicate both good and bad about an individual or company, and the growing use and ubiquity of video adds an added dimension we really have to be aware of.

Look at this nutty guy and how he performs for the crowd while police are attempting to subdue him. He yells and screams like he's dying, and you start to hear some people in the audience responding to his acting job and making it look like he's being brutalized, when all that's happening is he's resisting arrest and being held down.

The point is the way mashups can be made to tell the story someone wants someone to believe. When it's done honestly, it can be extremely powerful, when done dishonestly, like in this case, it can be devastating to those it's being perpetuated upon.

It shows the two-edged sword that the new media world represents. Realize that being in the online marketing business, or any business for that matter, has a new weapon that can be used against or for us.

The growing interaction with online video is especially powerful, in either instance, because people tend to believe what they see with their eyes, not thinking that the video could be edited to tell the story the one presenting wants to be heard and believed.

We not only need to understand the power of online video from both sides of the issue, but also understand people could use it against us and our businesses, as I mentioned here.

The incident shows the good, bad, ugly and power of new media. This situation shows the power it can provoke, along with how it can be misused.

Either way, it's the new world we live in, and as online marketers we need to be aware of how the medium can be used for or against us, or positively or negatively in marketing.
