After trading some barbs and some sword rattling with YouTube (GOOG) in 2006, Universal Music says it's now the most viewed video channel on YouTube.
Since the music company started putting up music videos on the site, they have in one year now received a total of 158 million views. They overtook CBS (CBS-A) and NBC (GE) with their approximate 4,000 videos on the Google-owned site. When I looked to confirm the views today, the stats showed they received over 212 million views overall. Much larger than reported at the Reuters blog.
A lot of other music companies have followed Universal, including major rivals Warner Bros. Music and BMG Music Entertainment.
Does this mean much? I don't know. Is it ending up with them selling more product? It doesn't seem like it yet.
This is probably more of a branding success, which is valuable to any company. At least it shows that people want to watch their artists, and online video is definitely a major, desired way to consume that content.
