Tips from Ira Glass - Storytelling - 2

In the second video of the storytelling series, Ira talks about search, research, prodution, mediocrity and success.

One of the things that aren't talked about much, according to Glass, is the amount of time needed in searching for or researching stories. He says that he spends over half of the time telling a story in looking for a great one to begin with. Production is secondary to the story itself.

Once Glass and his crew find a potentially good story, from the beginning they're willing to kill it. He figures about 30 to 50% of all stories they begin are killed.

He adds that when you look at the content you create, if it doesn't feel like it did when you originally heard or found the story, just be willing to kill it.

He says it's part of the creative process, and when you kill something, it can give life to even something better.

Most people telling stories need to learn to abandon junk. There's a lot more than is willing to be admitted, according to Glass.

Another interesting thought he talks about is that all content is trying to be a bunch of junk from the moment it is started to be developed. He says we must learn to aggressively prop it up at all stages of the process.

We have to be willing to be slasher and cutters, getting rid of everything that doesn't reach the heart. We must be ruthless in this says Glass. It's those that are toughest in this area that will create the best stuff.

Like anything else, failure is a big part of success. Much of the content we create will go nowhere, but we must continue to put it out there, Glass adds. The failures are in reality creating the circumstances for success. To hit the best stuff, we must continue to throw tries out there in able to get those successes.

It's as simple as creating a schedule and sticking with it. A lot of stuff will be created and killed. That's good, as we want to get rid of as much of the mediocre as we can. There's no other way to eventually produce content that will be truly something special.
