Microsoft's (MSFT) answer to Adobe Flash, Silverlight, is set to release on Friday. Silverlight is a runtime browser plugin and programming model to support video and run rich media applications.
Ray Ozzie, Microsoft's chief software architect said concerning the new product that "Silverlight is oriented toward the seamless deployment of applications across the Web, the enterprise server, the PC and mobile devices."
Other than end users, the product is also aimed at those who provide content for the purpose of distributing rich media and video across the Internet, and also developers who are creating various rich interactive online applications.
With Windows Vista "Windows Presentation Foundation," Silverlight was developed to advantage of those strengths and will be integrated with the upcoming Internet Information Server 7, which is scheduled to ship in February with Windows Server 2008.
Along with running on Internet Explorer, it will also work with Firefox and Safari.
