The battering that Juanita Bynum allegedly received from her husband Thomas W. Weeks III, made me think of the question of celebrity Christianity.
Of course the first issue will be the very public aftermath of whatever is determined after Weeks, who Bynum pressed charges against today, turns himself in or is apprehended.
The incident surrounded an attempt by Weeks and Bynum to reconcile their marriage, when things evidently went sour. Once they got outside the Ranaissance Concourse Hotel in Atlanta, the two started fighting. It got so violent that a bellman from the hotel had to pull Weeks off her, and then from there he fled.
Bynum alleges Weeks “choked her, pushed her down, kicked her and stomped her in the Renaissance parking lot," to the police. A police spokesman confirmed her condition, saying, “She was bruised up and battered. She had purple bruising around her neck and upper torso.”
My question is whether the way Christianity, in some circles, has turned into PR machines and marketing strategies, is good for the overall perception of believers?
While I understand anybody trying to get a message heard needs to somehow break through the noise, entering into the ways businesses do it seems a little off to me.
Most of the Bible and past Christianity has focused a lot more on the message and Christ Himself, not propping up and creating preacher-celebrities.
This isn't a defense of what was done to Bynum at all, it is now she will not be able to deal with it in the private way it really needs to be. It will be in the media throughout the entire process.
Should Christianity be in the business marketing of preacher-celebrities? Does it hurt the overall message rather than help it? Is marketing a place for bringing forth messages like this?
