Wikipedia is the top online source for information says Nielsen//NetRatings, as it increased its unique monthly visitors over the last year by 20 million.
For the month of May alone, Wikipedia drew 46.8 million unique visitors, an increase of 72 percent from June 2006.
"It's the seminal collaborative online resource," said Nielsen BuzzMetrics vice president marketing Max Kalehoff, who has researched the site. "It's like a living amoeba. It's constantly growing."
Some have doubted its value because of the mistakes they've found on the site, but that is somewhat lame in that mistakes can be found in any medium. The strength of this is the mistake can be cleared up quickly and made accurate.
Just like anything else, we have to be careful with any information we gather and make sure it's accurate. That's why we need to draw on common sense and various sources to get a full picture.
Large, breaking news stories has also been one of the major drivers to the site over time, as people can write and update the stories in close to real-time.
Like anything else, Wikipedia has its strengths and weaknesses, but people increasingly use it as a source of information and news. It's definitely become a big part of the Internet culture.
