MySpace (NWS-A) has been in negotiations with Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz, creators of Blood Diamond, Thirtysomething, My So-Called Life and Relativity, among numerous others, to provide short-form video of their upcoming film Quarterlife.
The News Corp. property has been quietly working on deals to build up professional online content to offer to its large social networking community. At this time, the deal is still being worked on and isn't confirmed. MySpace has been keeping quiet about it so far.
The movie itself is a story about how "magazine editor and writer Dylan Krieger sends her friends into fits when they discover that she keeps a rather insightful video blog about them on a Web site called 'quarterlife.'"
This isn't a bad storyline, as the success of Lonelygirl15 shows there's an online market for this type of content, which is obviously an influence on the film.
If the deal goes through, the film will be broken down into small segments to fit in with how viewers like to consume their online video. MySpace is willing to pay around $400,000 per episode, according to sources.
Assuming Zwick and Herskovitz produce the type of content that has attracted fans in the past, this should be pretty successful. They tend to produce more niche films that draw strong, but smaller fan bases, something the Internet especially caters to.
Starring in the show will be Bitsie Tulloch, Scott M. Foster, David Walton and Michelle Lombardo.
Herskovitz and Zwick scripted the story, while Herskovitz directed.
