Some of you may remember Daryn Kagan, who is known mostly for her work for CNN as a news and sports anchor. She's now online with her own video channel, focused on inspirational and encouraging stories.
On her site she says she's always asked how she can stay so positive after 20-years in the news busines. She says, " Simply, I believe in the adage, "Create what you seek." I was seeking inspiration, so I decided to create a home where those stories could live."
The site itself is worth visiting for viewing, but it is also a great case study in creating a niche, online TV channel and community.
The first thing that strikes me is how she's chosen to go against the trend of negative, so-called "hard" news. She's received criticism for going this route.
What's important about that is differentiation. Obviously it's more important to her than that, but for online video and marketing it's a critical element for success.
Another important aspect of the site is knowing her purpose. She says the purpose of the site is to "'Show the World What Is Possible!' one story at a time." This is another crucial part of success in any business endeavor: knowing why you're in the business. If you can't answer that, you're not in business no matter what you're doing. If you don't have a target you can't shoot.
The video site is more than stories though, it's also set up to form a community around the positive news stories. People are encouraged and invited to send stories they're part of or know of to the site to be potentially featured there. People are given the choice of either having Daryn tell the story, or tell the story themselves. I like that option.
The site would probably be much more lively if it was opened up more on the community side, besides the invitation for people to tell their stories. I think people would like to respond to Daryn on her blog which is included on the site, but there isn't a comment function included.
Even so, it's worth checking out both for the inspirational stories and to take a look at how the site is set up; specifically in relationship to the video productions.
