PayPal Inc. and mPoria Inc. Partner for Cell Phone Purchases
The partnership between PayPal Inc. (EBAY) and mPoria Inc may a preview of the strategy eBay will use to kick start its growth again.
The agreement will allow shoppers in the U.S make retail purchases using their cell phones while using PayPal to pay for them.
Talking to United Press International, mPoria CEO Dan Wright said, "Mobile commerce used to be about downloading ring tones, cell phone wallpaper, music -- but not physical merchandise."
Some of those participating in the initiative in the beginning are Buy.com, Music Books Plus and Moosejaw Mountaineering. Wright added that the total should surge to over 50 retailers by the end of 2007.
As part of the deal, retailers will receive visibility on a variety of online sites, including Paypal's Web site, AT&T, Verizon Wireless and Nextel mobile Web networks, according to the companies.
This seems to have a lot of promise to me. If the process is kept simple and quick, this could definitely be a long-term winnder for eBay and its partners.
