This is something that has taken far longer than it should have to me, but it is a good move by Warner Music to put its video archives online. They are partnering with Premium TV to put together online TV sites or "digital hubs" based upon label, genre or artist. The service will be offered for free, and will be monetized by advertising.
What should intrigue some fans is the content will be from unseen footage, so will be completely new to the users.
I think this will definitely make a big impact upon the business. It's something we've talked about before here, that the behind-the-scenes type of footage is one of the more popular entertainment offerings the music companies have, and thay have vastly underused it.
"This major new proposition in online TV represents a key step in our continued transformation," Patrick Vien, chairman and chief executive of Warner Music
International said. "These unique digital hubs will further enable us to monetize our content across the myriad of ever-developing ways that people enjoy music."
The reported losses by the music companies for the last quarter has moved them to finally start taking some steps they should have years ago. I think this may be one of the better ones.
