Terry Semel Gets KO'd at Yahoo! Co-Founder Jerry Yang Now CEO

The inevitable has now happend! Terry Semel who has been under pressure for some time on the lack of results for Yahoo! (YHOO), has finally been ousted from being CEO of the company, and has been replaced by co-founder Jerry Yang. Semel will remain with the company as a non-executive chairman.

Susan Decker, who may be being groomed for the top spot someday, has now taken over the duties of president. She had been recently put in charge of a new group which oversaw advertiser relationships. She has also worked as the CFO of the company in the recent past.

Semel said in a statement: "I believe Jerry and Sue, with their superb talents and intense dedication to Yahoo! and its people, are the perfect combination to carry us forward," he said. "This is the time for new executive leadership, with different skills and strengths, to step in and drive the company to realize its full potential -- it is the right thing to do, and the right time is now."

Some of the criticism leveled toward Semel is he hadn't been aggressive enough in pursuing acquisitions of important online companies. That's nothing new as Viacom got rid of Tom Freston for the same reasons; especially losing out on getting MySpace to News Corp. (NWS-A).

With the disappointing results surrounding Panama, which Semel had hoped would be a big boost to their advertising results, it was probably the deciding factor in his removal.

If he didn't buy existing Internet properties, and Yahoo's own internal-made product didn't fly, there wasn't much else that Semel had to offer as answers to shareholders for future growth.

Most think that he wasn't able to make the transition from a media background and fit it into an Internet stategy.
