A report by Harris Interactive which was conducted across seven countries (Spain, UK, France, Italy, US, Germany and Australia) reveals that readers expect the Internet to be their main source of news within five years. The poll included 8,749 adults.
Four of the countries - US, France, Italy and Spain - expect the Internet to overtake the TV networks as their main source of news, with Australians thinking they'll constitute about equal consumption between the TV and the Internet.
When respondents were asked what would attract readers to their services, the three top reason were:
* Offer more local news and information
* Improve the quality of the journalism
* More coverage and in-depth analysis of world events
It's seems like a contradiction, but the more locally interested a people are, at the same time they're also very interested in global events. I think it's because of the interconnectivity of the world where much of what happens somewhere else can have a major impact locally.
There is also the ability to know someone from almost anywhere in the world, so it can feel local to someone because of those friendships made. I think that's one of the key reasons for more local and global being desired at the same time.
Online news should be a growing pheonomenon for a long time into the future as the desire for more in-depth coverage seems insatiable. And it's just starting to take off.
