In a protest to the higher music royalties forced upon Internet radio Web sites, a number of online radio sites will be participating in a "Day of Silence" on Tuesday in the U.S.
The Copyright Royalty Board instituted the royalty rate hikes in March which could shut down a lot of small online radio web sites in the U.S. As usual it's the big
companies that will benefit from this action.
Included in the protesters will be the National Public Radio's Southern California station KCRQ-FM Santa Monica. The station said in a release that they would shut down all their three Webstreams of regular programming on June 26.
Instead the station has produced an hour-long program called "D-Day for Webcasters," which will include Yahoo, AccuRadio, Bagel Radio and Washington public radio, among a number of others. They will also have a discussion on how the new rates will affect the ability of stations to serve and stream music to their online audiences.
There has been an appeal filed with the U.S. District Court in Washington and a request for a stay on the new rate schedule during the process.
