Microsoft (MSFT) has changed the name of its online television platform, the company announced on Sunday. Formerly called Microsoft Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), now the service will be named Microsoft Mediaroom.
The service is currently used by 10 big media companies, including AT&T (T).
The purpose of the service is to bring computers and the television screen together by allowing users to access their hard drives and bring the rich media content to their TV screen.
Some of the future benefits Microsoft Media hopes to offer are the inclusion of some applications that are able to access the Internet without the use of a Web browser, where streaming video and photos are already placed online.
Microsoft also said they will offer a toolkit to developers which will allow them to create their own applications for the Mediaroom platform.
