It's going to be some amazing times in the widget field as far as monetizing goes. We're just starting to see some interesting things come out.
The latest one I've seen is from GoodStorm Music could work well on targeted sites.
If you like working with music and support indie music in particular, this is a way for you to make money while selling through a widget on your site.
As GoodStorm says on their about page, "With GoodStorm, you have a choice in the music you sell and where you sell it, without the hassle of restrictive digital rights management (DRM) controls. This means that you can generate a new source of income by doing what you love. And did we mention that selling music with GoodStorm is absolutely free?"
The widget can be used on social networking sites, blogs or your own website. Goodstorm says it has over 2.7 million indie tracks you can use to create your MixTapes, which can hold up to 100 songs.
If you have your own music you can even make a lot more, as long as you own the proper copyright. An artist or band would make $6.50 for a collection of 10 of its songs. For that same collection, a second-party vendor would make 50 cents for the recommendation on their site. Even with very average traffic that should add up quickly if it fits into your demographic.
As they say at Springwise, it's basically an "affiliate sales program built around widget technology."
Rightly, the comment is also made that the idea will work only if consumers are willing to consume music outside of the stores like iTunes. It's in a pre-beta mode at this time. For the right site, blog or demographic, this could produce some significant income.
