With Cricket being one of the fastest growing sports in the world, and huge in India and Asia, ESPN (DIS) has purchased the top specialty cricket Web site in the world - cricinfo.com.
The site, which now draws 7 million monthly users, will also cater to the growing south Asian expatriate population in the U.S. as well. The purchase was from the Wisden Group, based in the UK, and famous for its Cricketers' Almanac, published since 1864.
Concerning the international move, Russell Wolff, ESPN International executive vice president and managing director told Reuters, "We don't think of ourselves as an American sports television company. We think of ourselves as a large sports and media entertainment company that operates around the world."
ESPN Star Sports is the largest broadcaster of the sport in India, and has rights to the sport across the world.
This is a good move by ESPN, as cricket is a much bigger sport than most in the U.S. can imagine, and it should only increase as it gains a deeper foothold across the world. This should be a strong, highly visited site for years to come.
