Taking the first steps toward the goal of gaining a 10 percent share of search, Barry Diller and IAC/InterActiveCorp (IACI), announced they have redesigned their Ask.com search site.
Internally the company is calling it Ask3D, which was created to simplify searches by getting rid of the need to continuously refine searches.
Essentially how it's being done is by presenting results in three different frames, where users can find video and blog results much easier.
Analyst Greg Sterling, at Sterling Market Intelligence, believes that the effort will result in a quick jump of a point or two in the search engine battle saying, "It isn't perfect, but it's a big step in a new direction. They could gain a point or two in the near to medium term."
Ask.com dropped in U.S. searches last year from 5.8 percent to 5.1 percent this year, according to comScore, and are battling to bring something that makes their current users want to stay around, and entice enough other users to consider them "the other search engine."
They also hope it will drive people to their other Web properties like Match.com and Ticketmaster.com.
