In a deal with Skype (EBAY), Wal-Mart (WMT) has set aside a special section in their stores dedicated to the various products Skype offers.
The retailing giant will start the new section off in 1,800 of its stores. They'll include Webcams, headsets and handsets, among a number of other products.
The owner of Skype, eBay, has been looking at ways to monetize the Internet phone service, as the company looks to increase revenues and get a return on its investment. There have been growing expectations by eBay shareholders for it to start paying off.
"This relationship with Wal-Mart will increase exposure for Skype and our hardware partners in a single dedicated Internet communications section," Don Albert, vice president and general manager of Skype North America, said in a statement. "Our research suggests that when users add a Skype-certified accessory like a headset, handset or Webcam, it greatly enhances their experience, and they use Skype more to connect with family, friends and business colleagues."
Wal-Mart will also be the first retailer to offer consumers prepaid calling cards. The cost of the card is $8.85 and will allow a user to make unlimited calls in North America for three months. Wal-Mart will also offer $20 Skype credit for those making calls anywhere in the world.
This should be a big win for Skype as its online growth has slowed as most early adopters already use the service. This will make the general population much more aware of the service and its benefits.
