Led by consumer advertising, Internet ad reveneue for 2006 exceeded expectations as it totaled $16.9 billion for the year, an increase of 35 percent over 2005, according to the "Internet Advertising Revenue Report" from the Interactive Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers.
"The results for 2006 show the Internet continues to offer marketers the widest spectrum of advertising formats, from search-based text ads to dynamic rich-media and broadband video ads," said Peter Petrusky of PricewaterhouseCoopers. "Online publishers may continue to experience growth as marketing budget allocations to all interactive forms continue to increase."
Display ad spending especially growing fast, as its increasing at a faster rate than paid search, which means that companies branding themselves or their products is the fastest-growing online advertising category.
When you couple this with the potential for online video advertising in the next several years, we're seeing an explosion in online advertising that isn't going to slow down any time soon. Other platforms will probably suffer as money continues to gravitate toward the Internet.
