Google (GOOG) CEO Eric Schmidt said in a press conference at Google headquarters that the company made a decision a while ago that it isn't interested in owning content.
His comments were made in response to a question if he would be interested in buying a news organization like Dow Jones & Co. Inc. (DJ).
"We made a decision to focus primarily on user-generated content, and not on businesses where we would own the content," Schmidt said to reporters.
This confirms what he's said a number of times that he was to be a technology enabler, not an owner of media content.
Schmidt added that he sees strategic partnerships making more sense for the company concerning a variety of content versus owning it.
At the same meeting Schmidt that the acquisitions they are now interested in aren't for competitive reasons but for "building out a portfolio." Although he also said that they weren't opposed to buying larger companies, but they are more interested in filling in gaps in the current business through acquisitions, which would be related to smaller companies.
The smaller acquisitions also enable the company to land talented engineers along with the technology included in the deals.
