As part of the celebration of their 30th-anniversary, George Lucas and Lucasfilms is going to put up 250 movie clips of the series for fans to remix in whatever way they choose, reported the Wall Street Journal.
To make it easy for everybody, Lucasfilm has partnered with Eyespot, which will offer up a simple drag-and-drop system so everyone can participate. When finished, users can post them or share them with their friends.
This is somewhat of a change as Lucas has been known to fiercely protect his property.
There's no doubt that this will be a hit with fans, but there is a strong business aspect to it that stands out as well.
The first thing is with the end of the Star Wars movies, there needs to be something in place that will keep fan interest so merchandise and DVDs continue to sell over the years. This is the type of thing that will keep the interest high.
Jeffrey Ulin, senior director for distribution and business affairs at Lucasfilm said, "We're really trying to position ourselves for the next 30 years."
Once things begin to take off, there will be an advertising element added to the created videos, with revenue being shared between Eyespot and Lucasfilm.
Fans can access the video content on Starwars.com.
