The Imus Controversy and How the Internet Empowers Various Voices

Now with some of the Imus issue starting to settle down, it's good to look at a few things concerning it that show some of the strengths of the Internet.

The one thing the Internet does as far as communicating goes, is it gives people the opportunity to show the various ways of looking at things there are.

This is a strength and power for online marketers because it offers all of us a chance to show what it is we have to offer. For the most part we can't be stopped from showing what it is we have to say.

I'm talking about marketing messages now, not political rants and demagoguery.

As an example, here are a couple of videos I found online that talk about a different point-of-view concerning the Imus controversy and the call by some blacks for new black leadership and a caution about the attack on free speech.

The point is that they are able to be found, just like our potential marketing messages that can be quite different than standard advertising and ad copy, and still be up where they can be seen by visitors. It's now a matter of cutting through the clutter, rather than being able to put up a message we believe will reach our core audience.

The Internet in many ways has changed the rules in that there isn't a group of people gathered around a table making a decision on whether your message will be put up. It's now in our hands if we use the medium and empowerment available to us.
