The revamping of the Martha Stewart Web site will be a very interesting experiment to watch. With the majority of online content providers going the way of a stronger user-generated format, Stewart has rather chosen to go heavier on professional content in the beginning.
While there have been improvements in the user interface and site navigation, the major change is the number of DIY videos and article library that is now part of the site. There are now over 700 videos you can watch including episodes from Martha's TV show, thousands of articles you can read and over 5,000 recipes.
This doesn't mean that the site won't include more interactivity, that will be added down the road a little, as this is just the first step in the changing site. Later this year there are plans to add consumer-friendly tools like forums, polls and message boards built around targeted interests. In checking out the site though, I did find a message board already up and running under the community link.
What I like about this is that there have been a lot of unproven assumptions about
professionally made video and content that this site bears watching in the near term to see how people respond to it. I like that there is a time period where the majority of content is professionally made, while most interactive tools will be added later. This gives us an opportunity to learn how engaged people are without a strong interactive element.
