American Online is increasing its international presence with a move into Asia by launching an India portal. It will be the company's first foray into the Asian market.
Ron Grant, president and chief operating officer, told reporters in Bangalore, southern India that India would play a "central role" in their international expansion. "This is a very important -- I would say critical -- market for us," Grant said. "India has the highest priority in our international business."
He added that the AOL's international rollout will be very aggressive and we'll see a number of launches over the next several months.
The portal will offer videos from affiliates Warner Bros and Cartoon Network, news, sports and entertainment on www.AOL.in., and will include instant messenger, email and mobile services.
For their new email service, it's being dubbed "next generation," and will feature unlimited storage, spam and virus protection; and will include mobile access as well.
The India market is growing, with 45 million Indians using the Internet on a regular basis.
