In a report released by comScore Networks, they announced that worldwide Internet usage grew by 10 percent this year in the fifteen and over age bracket during January of 2007.
Of those 747 million people, India topped the list with a 33 percent increase. The Russian Federation followed with a 21 percent increase, with China coming in third with a 20 percent surge. China is now the second largest country in Internet population with 86.8 million users. The U.S., which grew by 2 percent in January, has 153.4 million users age 15 or older in the month of January 2007.
Bob Ivins, managing director, comScore Europe, said "Internet users outside the U.S. now account for 80 percent of the world's online population, with rapidly developing countries experiencing double-digit growth rates year-over-year."
The report also confirmed that those with broadband connections spent far more time online than those with dial-up access.
Among hours online, Canada ranked the highest in hours a month, with the average user being online for 39.6 hours. The others in the top five were all countries that have a significant broadband penetration, which are Israel, South Korea, the U.S. and the U.K.
Ivins concluded that "We have all believed that 'always-on' broadband connections stimulate usage - this study empirically confirms that conclusion."
