A report by eMarketer shows that the broadband market is undergoing a transformation which will result in even faster speeds. It is growing from speeds of 1 mbps up to between 50 mbps-100mbps in some countries, with no more cost than the 1mbps.
At this the the United States and China continue to be the two largest markets for broadband in the world. The U.S. has 54.6 million and China 46.6 million households with broadband. At the end of last year, there were 250 million broadband households around the world.
"Countries such as South Korea, Japan and, to a lesser extent, the United States are entering a new phase of broadband development," says Ben Macklin, eMarketer senior analyst. "The market is moving from the high-speed Internet to the very-high-speed Internet."
While the U.S and China lead in total number of broadband households, South Korea, Canada and Japan lead in percentage of households with South Korea having 78.8 percent, Canada 58 percent and Japan 52.3 percent.
In Japan and South Korea specifically, they're already into the next stage of broadband development as they're getting into fiber LAN connections, which will approach speeds of 50 - 100 mbps.
The greatest impact of all of this will be related to online video, as far as Internet marketers go. But from these statistic is can be seen that this is still going to take a number of years before it will have a strong affect upon the marketplace. This is why I think this is more a time to do a lot of experimenting in online video, rather than trying to make that the key to your business.
It'll be years before video takes the place that many envision it will. We need to try things and be ready for when that time comes. For now I wouldn't put too much of the budget into it unless it's the basic product or service you carry.
